Project NePTWNE Director Discusses Microplastic Pollution on TalkErie

Published: 07/18/2024

Dr. Sam Mason on TalkErie July 18, 2024

Sam Mason, Ph.D., director of Project NePTWNE, sits down on the Joel Natalie Show to discuss microplastic pollution in the Great Lakes.

"We've all seen it, you know, bags stuck on trees or litter on the side of the road," explained Mason. "A car drives over it and it breaks into the smaller and smaller pieces and then they end up being released into the water. Every time it rains, it's basically a pollution event. There is no treatment of stormwater. Wastewater goes through a wastewater treatment plant, but stormwater is release directly into bodies of water. So any kind of littered item, whether intentional or more and more it's unintentional, is ending up in our waterways and breaking into these small microplastics."
